Memento - Neo Noir Classic
The new century brought this jewel with Guy Pearce and Carrie-Anne Moss. But before the movie came to be, the short story Memento Mori was published, I think, by the New Yorker.
Memento is a psychological neo-noir movie. The protagonist is caught in a memory-loss loop produced by a clubbing to his head. To survive in this awful situation, the protagonist resorts to polaroids and tatoos. And everybody in the movie is out to get him. This is fiction at its best. Think about this situation. One tool that I used often when starting a story is to think about protagonist and situation. Here, in this paragraph you have both elements put together in a marvelous way.
Why I want you to watch this movie:
The movie is a mind twister. It’s told in both chronological and reverse chrnological order. It’s built to mess your mind a bit, while being intriguing and suspenseful. It’s a master work in that way. But you can’t pull this off just by presenting scenes randomly in both reverse and forward chronological order. So, the director, got thinking and he presented the reverse scenes in color and the forward scenes in black and white. This chronological set up will stretch your mind a bit. It will keep you glued to the screen and turn you into a detective.
But I don’t want to spoil it for you. You can read the story here: https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/books/a1564/memento-mori-0301/
The movie is widely available too. You won’t regret it.
Best of luck.
